Justice Center volunteers are available to community groups and organizations to facilitate dialogue around sensitive issues or controversial topics.

Often a neutral facilitator is the key to a group's ability to objectively analyze a problem or meet a challenging situation. Having an outside facilitator also allows all members of the group to take part in the discussion.

When possible, groups will have their choice of several facilitators, and can select the individual with whom they will be most comfortable.

Legal Clinics

The Justice Center's Legal Clinic provides one time advice about legal rights and responsibilities, options for dealing with legal issues, and information about how the legal system works so you know what to expect when you have to go to court.

The Legal Clinic is held on the first Monday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.* Appointments are recommended, but the Legal Clinic also takes walk-ins.

Legal Clinics are staffed by local attorneys who volunteer their time. If you will need ongoing legal assistance, a referral can be made at the end of your session to a local attorney with the expertise you need.

Paralegal Assistance

The assistance of a paralegal is available at no cost to area residents in need of problem solving in order to resolve their issues. The CJC's paralegal can assist with the completion of forms and applications, suggest approaches to resolving problems, identify legal and non-legal resources available to the resident and make referrals to the CJC's Legal Clinic, the Caledonia Court's Legal Clinic, Vermont Legal Aid, private attorneys and other legal assistance as appropriate.

Justice Center staff are available during regular business hours to provide St. Johnsbury residents and businesses with problem solving assistance.

Brochures and written materials are available at the Justice Center on state and local programs and services available to community members. Staff will help people assess their needs and access the right resource to resolve their problem.

This service may be accessed at any time the Justice Center is open, without an appointment. Often, information can be provided by phone.

Trained volunteer mediators are available to assist St. Johnsbury residents, businesses and organizations in resolving their disputes.

Disputes may be referred to the Justice Center by agencies, organizations or the parties themselves. Mediation sessions are normally held at the Justice Center during regular working hours, but other arrangements can be made when necessary.

Mediation is a preferred way to resolve a dispute when disputants are going to have an ongoing relationship and want to avoid the cost and delay of going to court. Typical types of disputes suitable for mediation are landlord/tenant, neighbor/neighbor, employer/employee and school/student.

Mediation sessions and the agreements that come out of them are strictly confidential.
