St. Johnsbury Country Club
St. Johnsbury is home to a magnificent 18-hole golf course at the St. Johnsbury Country Club on Rte 5, just a few minutes’ drive north of the downtown. The course is semi-private, which means that there are members, but the public is welcome to play there, too.
And what a round of golf you will play! The St. Johnsbury course is known for its beauty, scenic views, and challenging holes. The first nine holes of the course were designed in 1923 by legendary golf coursedesigner and two-time winner of the British Open, Willie Park, Jr. The second nine were designed by Geoffrey Cornish in 1992 to "cradle" the original nine holes. The first nine require finesse, and the second nine demand power. Together the course makes for a distinctive golfing experience of the highest quality.
The course has been home to several statewide championships, including the Vermont State Amateur championship and the Mid-Amateur championship (which excludes college-age amateurs), and will be the host to the 2011 Vermont Women's Senior Amateur championship and the 2011 PGA Pro-1 Amateur championship. The club also hosts men's and women's leagues, as well as a junior clinic for seven weeks in the summer.
The Country Club hosts a number of fundraising events throughout the season, which runs from April through October. There are at least twenty such events throughout the season, and the public is encouraged to join the fun.
Country Club staff include Bryce Chaffee, PGA Head Golf Professional; Todd Rainville, Golf Course Superintendent; Freddy Torres, Food and Beverage Manager; and Melanie Fox-McGregor, Accountant.
